Reference used to make this work.

I started doing the base of this prop, the cover and pages.

Then started sculpting the rest of the elements, the skull, compass, locket and clips.

Left side (Final render).

The last thing to be done, before texturizing it, was to add details to every part. In the cover, added the octopus and clams; in the skull, added the cracks.
